Father’s Day Weekend – without electricity!
June 25, 2010
Last weekend was such a crazy, fun weekend. One where we had no electricity from Friday afternoon through Sunday night. Late Friday afternoon we were all going out (for my 11 year old’s birthday) to Enchanted Castle in Lombard. We had to run a few errands beforehand and on our way there, we drove straight into the storm (which we had no idea was coming because we never watch the news and rarely listen). The wind was so strong that we thought some of the street signs would break. When we got to Enchanted Castle, we were told that they were closing until the storm passed because of power surges. So we went out to eat instead. We were in the restaurant during the storm and came home to total darkness. A huge tree branch across the street had fallen on the power lines.
But it was so romantic! We have tons of candles and a generator for the fridge, so it was no problem for us.
We have two fireplaces. One in the living room (pictured above) and one in the basement.
We don’t burn wood in the living room fireplace, but always have it filled with candles.

Everything looks so pretty by candle light. Danny couldn’t get enough of the candles. He just sat there and watched the fire and played with the wax for hours. He even told us that he wished we were Amish so that we never had electricity.

On Saturday we had a family birthday party to go to and when we got home, we made chocolate covered almonds and pecan brittle.
Yum, that was good. But my jaw hurt from all the hard chewing.
On Sunday, Father’s Day, we spent most of the day just bumming around the house. We all slept in. Our oldest, Alek, made pancakes for us from scratch. We played board games and then headed outside for the boys to shoot their bow and arrows and bb guns (good old fashioned boy fun).

I think we need to institute a “power free” weekend once in a while.
The kids had so much fun that even their DS systems didn’t interest them.
